A couple weeks ago I was digging through our junk drawer—you know…the one with dead batteries, birthday candles from like three years ago, random LEGO pieces, and at least five pens that don’t work 😂—and I found one of my son’s old Treasure Planet invitations.
I stopped for a second because…aww.

So naturally, instead of finishing the drawer (which still isn’t clean, by the way), I opened Canva and started giving my old invitation templates a little refresh.
Nothing crazy. Just those tiny little tweaks you only notice after you’ve actually used them for a real party.
And honestly? I like these versions so much better.
Treasure Planet Invitations Still Deserve More Love
My oldest has never been the kid chasing whatever movie everyone else was obsessed with.
While his friends were all about superheroes and dinosaurs, he randomly fell head-over-heels for Treasure Planet.
And honestly…
I kinda got it.
It’s space…but not really.
It’s pirates…but not really.
It’s treasure maps, glowing galaxies, old ships flying through space, weird little creatures, gold coins, giant planets…it’s just fun without looking like every other “space birthday” you scroll past.
That’s exactly why I wanted these Treasure Planet invitations to feel more like an adventure instead of just throwing stars all over the page and calling it done.
So I leaned into all my favorite little details.
Deep navy skies.
Warm gold accents.
Vintage treasure maps.
Compass graphics.
Old scroll paper.
Little glowing stars.
Some pirate vibes.
Some sci-fi vibes.
Basically the whole “let’s go find treasure across the galaxy” thing.
One thing I always keep in mind though…
Parents do not care how pretty an invitation is if they can’t read where the birthday party actually is. 😂

Canva Makes My Life Way Easier (Because I Already Have Enough Going On)
I keep coming back to Canva because…I just don’t have the patience for complicated stuff anymore.
Half the time I’m editing invitations while chicken nuggets are in the oven and somebody is yelling,
“Mommmm…where’s my water bottle?”
No clue, buddy. 😂
Usually I just open the template, change my kid’s name, fix the date, update the address…
…then realize I forgot to change the time.
Every.
Single.
Time.
I don’t know why that’s always the last thing my brain notices.
While I was refreshing these templates, I also noticed something funny.
The gold looked gorgeous on my laptop.
Printed?
It looked…kinda muddy.
Not terrible.
Just…blah.
So I brightened the gold, added tiny little white highlights around the treasure pieces, printed another test, and yep…
Way better.
Another lesson I learned the hard way?
Don’t make the party details microscopic just because it looks “clean.”
One grandma texted me asking what time the party started because she couldn’t zoom in enough on her phone.
That was enough for me.
Bigger font wins.
Always.
The whole update honestly took maybe ten minutes.
Which is about all the uninterrupted time moms get anyway. 😂

Little Party Hacks That Actually Worked
I’ve thrown enough birthday parties to know one thing.
You absolutely do not need to spend hundreds of dollars to make a room look cute.
Honestly, some of my favorite decorations have been the cheapest ones.
Here’s what worked really well for us:
- Gold chocolate coins scattered around the tables. The kids thought they were decoration…until they realized they could eat them. 😂
- Navy table runners with battery fairy lights tucked underneath. Instant galaxy vibes.
- Printable treasure maps for a scavenger hunt. Kept everyone busy for way longer than I expected.
- Black, navy, and metallic gold balloons. Super simple but looked really put together.
- Glow sticks. I don’t know what magic lives inside glow sticks, but kids lose their minds over them every single time.
One little thing I didn’t expect?
The treasure maps became part of the entertainment.
Some of the kids were holding the Treasure Planet invitations upside down, trying to figure out if there was a secret clue hidden somewhere.
There wasn’t.
…but I definitely let them keep searching. 😂
Bought me at least fifteen quiet minutes while we got pizza ready.

Why are balloons suddenly so expensive??
So I try to save money wherever I can.
Most of the time I print my Treasure Planet invitations as 5×7 photos at Walgreens whenever there’s a coupon floating around.
It’s quick, they’re usually ready the same day, and honestly they look really nice.
If I’m printing a bigger batch, Staples has been great too.
I almost always pick matte cardstock.
Glossy makes the galaxy colors pop a little more.
But matte hides fingerprints.
And after thirty kids have grabbed the invitation with sticky cupcake hands…
You’ll appreciate that.
If you’re printing at home?
Please skip regular printer paper.
Heavy cardstock makes such a huge difference.
It instantly feels like an actual invitation instead of another paper coming home from school.
My Favorite Part Happened After the Party
The decorations were fun.
The cake disappeared in about twelve seconds.
The kids had an absolute blast.
But my favorite moment happened afterward.
One of the other moms looked at the invitation and asked,
“Oh cute! Did you get these from Etsy?”
When I told her I had just edited them myself in Canva…
She looked genuinely shocked.
Not gonna lie…
That made my day a little.
Because that’s really the goal, right?
Something personal.
Something cute.
Without spending hours making it.
Then later that night, while we were cleaning up, my son quietly tucked one of the invitations into his keepsake box.

Yep!

Just double-check whether any optional Canva Pro graphics are mixed into the design before downloading.

What’s the best print size?
I always stick with 5×7.

Matte or glossy?
I’m team matte all day.
