Monday afternoon school pickup is basically unofficial mom meeting time at our elementary school. Somebody’s passing out birthday invites, somebody forgot their water bottle (again), and somebody’s kid is already asking if their birthday can be “next weekend.” That’s literally how Charlotte ended up deciding she wanted a Dumbo party. By the time we got home, Andrew was already throwing out decoration ideas while I was opening Canva because… honestly… that’s just kinda how we do things around here.

I’ve made a bunch of Dumbo Invitation designs over the years, but they started feeling a little… meh. Not bad. Just missing that extra “aww” moment. So I ended up refreshing the whole collection, and ngl, I’m way happier with these than the older ones.

Why Choose Dumbo for Your Child’s Birthday?

Dumbo Just Never Gets Old

I swear Dumbo has that weird Disney magic where every generation somehow falls in love with him all over again.

Charlotte watched the movie with her grandparents one rainy Saturday, and for the next week she was running around the house with her blanket tied around her shoulders pretending she could fly. Louise obviously copied her because younger siblings have exactly zero original thoughts.

That’s kinda why I love this theme. It isn’t loud. It isn’t one of those trends that’ll disappear six months from now. It’s sweet, nostalgic, and somehow still feels fresh.

When I started updating these invitations, I leaned more into that soft storybook vibe instead of making everything circus-red and super busy.

Think…

  • fluffy clouds
  • watercolor elephants
  • baby blue skies
  • buttery yellows
  • tiny stars
  • vintage circus tickets
  • striped tents
  • little balloons floating everywhere
  • hand-drawn fonts that actually stay readable

It feels cozy. Like something you’d actually wanna keep in a memory box instead of tossing after the party.

Honestly, It Works for Babies and Bigger Kids

This surprised me.

I kinda assumed Dumbo was mostly a first birthday thing.

Turns out… not really.

For little babies, the softer pastel versions are ridiculously cute.

For toddlers and preschoolers, I just bumped up the brighter colors, added more balloons, and suddenly it felt like a whole different party.

Charlotte picked the version with the biggest clouds because she said, “It looks like Dumbo’s really flying.”

Good enough for me.

16+ Designs Because Kids Change Their Minds Every Five Minutes

Andrew always laughs because I never stop at one design.

He’s like, “Didn’t you already finish these?”

Sir… have you met children?

One minute they love soft blue.

The next minute they suddenly want everything rainbow because their best friend has rainbow shoes.

So yeah… I made a bunch.

Some are vintage.

Some are colorful.

Some are really simple if you’re not into all the extra circus stuff.

Honestly, I like having options because kids are beautifully unpredictable.

Canva Makes This Way Easier Than It Looks

If you can text your sister or order groceries online, you can edit these.

Seriously.

Open Canva.

Click the text.

Type your kid’s name.

Fix the date because somehow I always type the wrong Saturday first.

Maybe swap the font if you’re feeling a little extra.

Done.

The hardest part is deciding which one to use.

They’re Actually Ready to Print

This is one of those things I didn’t care about until I ruined invitations years ago.

I used this super pale font because Pinterest convinced me it looked “minimal.”

Minimal?

Girl… it was invisible.

Half the grandparents would’ve needed reading glasses and a flashlight.

So now every invitation gets a test print before I call it finished.

Lesson learned.

What I Actually Ended Up Doing

Dumbo Birthday

Okay… tiny confession.

I almost left one version exactly as it was because it looked really cute on my laptop.

Then I printed one copy.

Immediately knew something was off.

The RSVP number basically disappeared into one of the clouds.

Like…

Where’d it go??

Andrew walked by, looked at it for maybe three seconds, and went,

“Babe… nobody’s calling you if they can’t read the phone number.”

Fair point.

So I darkened the text, nudged it underneath the balloons, made it one font size bigger, and suddenly everything looked way cleaner.

Also… I got a little carried away with script fonts.

Again.

Every single time I convince myself they’re adorable.

Every single time I remember half my family reads cursive like it’s ancient hieroglyphics.

I switched back to a rounded font.

Way cuter.

Way easier.

Zero regrets.

A Few Dumbo Invitations I Kept Coming Back To

Classic Storybook Dumbo — Perfect if your kid loves soft Disney vibes and you’re planning something sweet without going overboard.

Blue Sky Adventure — Super cute for first birthdays. Lots of fluffy clouds and that dreamy little flying elephant feel.

Vintage Circus — If your little one is obsessed with carnival rides, popcorn, and all the fun fair stuff.

Pastel Balloon Party — Great for toddlers who love color but don’t need every inch covered in confetti.

Modern Minimal Dumbo — For the moms who secretly want the kids’ party to match the aesthetic of their living room. I see you. I respect it.

Printing Your Dumbo Invitations: Options & Best Practices

Home Printer… or Save Yourself the Ink Drama

Listen.

If your printer behaves…

Love that for you.

Mine randomly decides today’s the day to print everything with mysterious streaks.

So I usually print one test copy at home just to double-check spelling, then upload everything to Walgreens.

Their 5×7 photo prints are usually around 20 cents each, especially if they’re running one of those random weekly promos.

Honestly? It’s cheaper than replacing my printer ink every other month.

Staples is another solid backup if you want thicker cardstock.

They’ve saved me more than once.

Matte or Glossy?

I almost always grab matte cardstock.

Glossy photographs really well, but little kid fingerprints??

Absolutely feral.

Matte hides all of that, feels nicer in your hand, and honestly just looks more like an invitation instead of a photo print.

But if you’re all about bright colors, glossy is still super cute.

No wrong answer here.

Sending Them Digitally Is Totally Normal Now

A lot of parents at Charlotte’s school actually prefer getting invitations by text.

One less thing floating around inside backpacks that may or may not ever make it home.

So I usually download the Canva file as a PNG, send it in our class group chat, then print just enough copies for grandparents and a few close friends.

Less paper.

Less money.

Less stuff ending up under somebody’s couch.

Win-win-win.

Easy Decorations That Don’t Cost a Fortune

I’m not trying to spend Disney World money on a birthday party.

No thanks.

Honestly, mixing cheaper pieces together looked way better than buying one giant matching party kit.

I found a bunch of cute ideas from Amazon, Etsy, and Pinterest, then kinda mixed everything together until it felt right.

Things that actually worked:

  • blue balloon garlands
  • striped popcorn boxes
  • little elephant cupcake toppers
  • vintage circus signs
  • cloud-shaped table confetti

It’s amazing what balloons can do when you’re trying to distract everyone from the fact your cake frosting isn’t perfectly smooth.

The Kids Didn’t Care About My Fancy Decorations Anyway

Know what absolutely stole the show?

Not the balloon arch.

Not the cute table setup.

Andrew grabbed an old laundry basket, taped giant elephant ears onto it, and suddenly every kid wanted to toss bean bags into “Dumbo.”

That’s it.

Five minutes.

Basically free.

Meanwhile, I rented this bubble machine thinking it’d be the coolest thing ever.

The kids barely noticed.

Parenting keeps us humble.

Matching Printables Make Everything Feel Put Together

After I already had the invitation finished, I reused the same artwork for pretty much everything else.

Because why make more work for yourself?

I turned it into:

thank you cards
cupcake toppers
water bottle labels
favor tags
welcome sign

Nobody knew it took me like… ten extra minutes.

I’m definitely not correcting them.

My Favorite Part After the Party

Dumbo Birthday Invitations

This honestly made me laugh.

Three moms asked me where I ordered the invitations.

Ordered.

I told them I literally edited them in Canva while Louise was eating Goldfish crackers on the kitchen floor and Andrew was grilling burgers outside.

One mom looked genuinely shocked.

Charlotte tucked one invitation into her keepsake box because she wanted to “save Dumbo forever.”

Meanwhile Louise just wanted leftover cupcakes.

Honestly?

Both reactions felt exactly right.

That’s why I keep making invitations.

Not because they have to be Pinterest-perfect.

Just because those tiny little details end up becoming part of the memories… and somehow that’s the stuff our kids hang onto.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dumbo Canva Templates

Can I edit everything in Canva?

Yep. Change the name, age, colors, fonts, wording… honestly, if you decide the night before that your kid suddenly wants purple instead of blue, you’re covered.

Do I need Canva Pro?

Nope! These are made to work with Canva’s free version unless a template specifically says otherwise.

What’s the best size to print?

I almost always stick with 5×7 because Walgreens, Staples, and even home printers handle that size really easily. Plus, finding envelopes is way less annoying.

Matte or glossy?

I’m Team Matte all day because sticky little fingerprints are basically guaranteed at kid parties. But if you love colors that really pop, glossy still looks adorable.

Can I just text the invitation instead?

Absolutely. Half the parents at our school actually prefer that now because nothing survives the backpack black hole. Download it as a PNG or PDF and send it over.

How long did this actually take you?

Editing? Maybe 15 minutes.

Picking which design I wanted?

Embarrassingly longer.

I changed my mind at least four times before Andrew finally said, “They’re all cute. Just hit download already.”

Fair enough. 😂
