Why We Ended Up Picking an Emperor’s New Groove Party

I actually love party themes that aren’t the same five things everyone else is doing.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Bluey as much as the next mom, but when Charlotte mentioned Emperor’s New Groove, I kinda went…

“Wait… why DON’T I ever see this theme?”

It’s goofy. It’s colorful. The characters are hilarious. Even adults get half the jokes.

Honestly it feels like one of those movies that somehow gets funnier after you’ve watched it like… twelve times.

The design kinda came together on its own

The funny thing is, I originally thought I’d lean really hard into the royal palace vibe.

Nope.

The llama won.

Kids absolutely lose it over llama Kuzco. 😂

So I started building around that instead.

Bright jungle greens, warm gold, little temple details, sunshine, palm leaves, cacti, potion bottles, goofy faces… basically all the stuff that makes you immediately think, “Yep… that’s Emperor’s New Groove.”

I also kept the layout pretty clean because… real life.

Parents don’t wanna play detective trying to find the party address buried under seventeen graphics.

Customizing Your Invitations in Canva: What I Actually Ended Up Doing

Okay… here’s where I almost messed it up.

I picked this cute mustard-yellow font because I thought it matched the movie.

Looked adorable on my screen.

Printed it…

Couldn’t read half of it. 😂

Classic.

So I changed the text to a darker brown, bumped the font size up just a tiny bit, printed another one, and boom.

Way better.

That’s honestly why I always print ONE copy first.

Not because I’m super organized…

Mostly because I’ve made enough dumb little mistakes to know better now.

Another thing…

I always edit the address first.

Not the name.

Not the decorations.

The address.

Because one year I copied an old invitation and almost sent twenty families to the wrong neighborhood.

Andrew caught it literally while I was stuffing envelopes.

Still makes me cringe.

Tips I Learned After Making Way Too Many Invitations

I’ve realized kids care about completely different stuff than we do.

I used to obsess over matching fonts.

Charlotte?

She immediately pointed at the llama.

That was it.

So now I keep things simple.

A funny quote.

A cute little llama next to the RSVP.

Maybe their age inside a sunshine graphic.

Done.

Sometimes less really is more… which I hate admitting because I love adding one more little thing every single time.

Also…

Read the invitation out loud before you print.

I don’t know why, but somehow your brain catches weird mistakes faster that way.

No clue why.

It just does.

Printing and Sharing Your Masterpiece

I’ve probably tried every printing option at this point.

If I’m only making around 15 or 20 invitations, I almost always run over to Walgreens.

Their 5×7 photo prints are usually around $0.20 each, and I can grab snacks, shampoo, birthday candles, and somehow leave with seasonal throw pillows I absolutely didn’t need.

Target effect… but Walgreens version. 😂

Staples has been great too if I want thicker cardstock.

For paper…

I’m definitely Team Matte.

Glossy is really pretty.

Like… really pretty.

But fingerprints.

Tiny sticky kid fingers.

Enough said.

Matte just survives birthday parties better in my opinion.

And if you’re printing at home?

Seriously…

Print ONE first.

Greens especially can come out way darker than they looked on your screen.

Ask me how I know.

I love a cute party.

I do not love spending a small fortune on decorations everyone’s gonna look at for like… two hours.

So here’s where I usually snoop around.

Honestly the balloon kits are hit or miss.

But tropical leaves, fake vines, gold balloons, little llama decorations, and party favors?

Usually way cheaper than buying them in-store.

This is where I grab personalized stuff if I’m feeling a little extra.

Custom welcome signs.

Three hours later I’m considering building an entire cardboard temple in my garage.

One little budget trick that actually worked…

Skip the expensive themed balloon kit.

Grab mostly green balloons, toss in a handful of gold ones, add fake tropical leaves around the table, and suddenly everything looks intentional.

Nobody’s counting balloons.

Promise.

After the Party…

Honestly?

My favorite part wasn’t even during the party.

It was afterward.

One of Charlotte’s friends asked if she could keep the invitation because she wanted to hang the llama on her bedroom wall.

I wasn’t expecting that.

Another mom texted me later asking where I ordered them.

When I told her they were Canva templates, she literally replied…

“Wait… seriously??”

Yep.

A couple font changes.
