My Editing Process
I always start by replacing the birthday name first because that’s usually the biggest text on the page.
Then I work from top to bottom instead of randomly clicking everywhere because somehow that’s how I end up missing the party time.
I swapped one of the brighter green fonts after printing my first test copy because it looked amazing on my laptop but kind of disappeared once it came off the printer. I changed it to white with a dark outline, printed another copy, and it looked so much better.
Also… double-check AM versus PM.
Ask me why I now check that twice.
Updating the Party Details
Besides changing the name and age, I added one little sentence underneath.
“Meet us for a mystery you’ll never forget!”
It honestly made the whole invitation feel less like a template and more like something made just for Charlotte.
I also made the RSVP phone number slightly bigger because grandparents appreciate that way more than tiny decorative fonts.
Little Extras That Made It Feel Personal
Canva makes it ridiculously easy to drag in extra graphics.
I added:
Tiny dog paw prints around the border
More flashlight icons near the party details
A couple extra clue notes
One fake “CONFIDENTIAL” stamp across the corner
None of those took more than a few minutes, but they made the invitation feel way less generic.
Printing & Sharing Without Spending Much
Printing at Home
If your printer handles cardstock well, honestly you’re probably fine.
I usually grab matte cardstock because fingerprints don’t show nearly as much after kids pass invitations around at school. Glossy definitely makes colors pop more though, especially the Mystery Machine blues and greens.
Walgreens Was Still the Cheapest Option
Most of the time I upload the finished Canva file to Walgreens and order 5×7 photo prints. They’re usually around $0.20 each, depending on whatever promotion is running that week, and I don’t have to worry about my printer suddenly deciding today is the day it runs out of cyan ink.
Staples is another solid choice if you want heavier cardstock instead of photo paper. The colors come out really sharp there too.
Sending Them Digitally
Honestly, about half our guests opened the invitation from a text anyway.
I downloaded the Canva design as a PNG and dropped it into our family group chat, then emailed grandparents who still prefer checking email over texts.
It saved me a couple extra stamps.

We reused Halloween decorations.

Fake cobwebs, battery candles, caution tape from the garage, cardboard signs pointing toward “mystery clues,” and a couple balloons in teal, orange, lime, and purple made everything come together.
Andrew parked his old green wagon outside and the kids immediately called it the Mystery Machine.
Good enough.
What Happened After the Party
The funniest part wasn’t even the games.
A few kids walked into the backyard pretending they were detectives because they’d already seen the invitation.
One little boy kept asking Charlotte where the first clue was before presents were even opened.
That was honestly when I realized invitations kind of set the mood before the party even starts.
A couple moms asked where I found the design because they thought I’d ordered custom invitations somewhere. When I told them I edited everything in Canva during one evening while Louise was building towers with magnetic tiles beside me, they looked genuinely surprised.
