Immediately better.

Zoom out before you download.
I know that sounds weird, but whenever I stay zoomed in the whole time, I totally miss crooked text boxes or graphics floating a little too close to the edge. Zooming out for ten seconds catches way more than you’d think.

Printing Your Designs: Here’s What Actually Worked
I still print one copy at home first.
Always.
Because finding a typo after you’ve ordered twenty invitations? Yeah… hard pass.
Most years I upload everything to Walgreens. Their 5×7 prints are usually around twenty cents each, which is honestly cheaper than me wasting ink trying to convince my home printer to cooperate.
If I’m printing a bunch for an entire class, Staples has never let me down either.
Now… glossy or matte?
I’m Team Matte all day.
Glossy is really pretty. Super shiny. Makes colors pop.
It also somehow collects sticky kid fingerprints within approximately four seconds.
Matte cardstock just feels nicer in little backpacks, lunchboxes, and those mysterious kitchen junk drawers every family somehow has.

Okay… here’s where the party actually became fun.
The invitations got everyone excited, but these little activities kept twenty-something kids busy enough that the adults actually got to finish a conversation.

Build Something Ridiculous
I threw cardboard tubes, masking tape, paper cups, pom-poms, popsicle sticks, and stickers onto one table.
That was it.
I called it the Invention Station.
The kids built robots… rocket ships… one very confusing dinosaur vacuum thing…
Honestly? I stopped asking questions.
Dollar Tree had almost everything, then I grabbed a cheap pack of extra craft supplies from Amazon because somehow we always run out of tape halfway through.
Perry’s Backyard Spy Mission
Hide little clues around the yard.
Give everybody a tiny “secret agent” card.
Watch them suddenly become extremely serious investigators.
Pinterest has so many free clue ideas it’s honestly dangerous if you enjoy scrolling “for five minutes.”

Pool Noodle Roller Coaster
This one was such a hit.
Grab pool noodles, cut them in half, tape them to boxes or chairs, then let kids race marbles.
Simple.
Cheap.
Way more entertaining than I expected.
Doof’s Balloon Challenge
Every balloon had a silly challenge inside.
Dance like Perry.
Talk backwards.
Pretend you’re building an -inator.
The amount of giggling… absolutely worth vacuuming balloon pieces afterward.
For cheap party stuff, I usually bounce between Amazon, Etsy, and Pinterest. Amazon is great for bulk craft supplies, Etsy has adorable printable games if you’re short on time, and Pinterest is basically where I accidentally lose an hour every single time.
Essential Party Planning Checklist: The Stuff Future Me Always Forgets
Not gonna lie… I make checklists because otherwise I’d remember cupcakes and completely forget candles.
Again.
Here’s basically what I did.
- Finish editing the Canva invitation.
- Print one sample first because printers love surprises.
- Send invitations about two weeks before the party.
- Grab craft supplies early before the good stuff disappears.
- Buy extra tape. Seriously. Just trust me.
- Toss an extra Sharpie near the gift table.
- Take pictures before the kids lovingly destroy every decoration.
- Keep thank-you cards on the kitchen counter so I actually remember to send them.
After the Party… This Was My Favorite Part
The funniest thing wasn’t even during the party.

Yep. Names, age, colors, fonts, party details… all of it. If you accidentally make your kid’s age the size of a billboard like I did, it’s an easy fix.
Do I need Canva Pro?
Nope. These work with Canva Free, which makes me very happy because I already have enough subscriptions sneaking into my bank account.
Matte or glossy?
Matte gets my vote every time. It still looks colorful, doesn’t show fingerprints nearly as much, and just feels a little more sturdy when it’s bouncing around in backpacks.
How far ahead should I send invitations?
Two weeks has been the sweet spot for us. If you’ve got soccer, baseball, dance, or every other activity known to mankind happening, maybe shoot for three weeks.
Can I just text the invitation?
Oh, absolutely.
I text the digital version to grandparents because they’ll ask for it anyway, then print a handful for classmates. Kids still get weirdly excited bringing home an actual invitation instead of another message their parents have to scroll back and find.

Once I’ve settled on a theme, I kinda go all in.
