Customize Like a Pro: Step-by-Step Canva Guide for Your Invitations

Editing everything in Canva was honestly the easy part.

The hard part was changing the birthday time six different times because our family group chat could not get their lives together.

I always swap the party details first because if I start changing decorations before the text, I WILL forget something. Ask me how I know.

One thing I totally didn’t think about…

I used this super cute bright green font because it matched Mike perfectly.

Looked amazing on my screen.

Printed?

Not so much.

It kind of blended into the background and my husband literally squinted at it across the table.

So I made the green just a little darker and suddenly everything popped. Such a tiny fix, but it made a huge difference.

Oh—and don’t make my other mistake.

I had one cute little monster footprint sitting right behind the RSVP number because apparently I got a little carried away decorating.

Charlotte goes, “Mom…how are people supposed to call us?”

Fair point.

Now I always print one copy at home before sending the whole order anywhere.

It takes maybe two minutes and has saved me from reprinting invitations more than once.

For supplies, I usually browse Amazon for colorful cardstock packs, Etsy for printable Monsters Inc games, and Pinterest when I need somebody else’s DIY brain because mine taps out around Wednesday.

Andrew made these giant monster doors out of foam board after dinner one night, and I kept saying they looked like something we’d accidentally spend eighty bucks on at a party store.

Some other things that looked cute without blowing the budget:

• Balloon garland in teal, lime, and purple
• Giant paper eyeballs taped everywhere because apparently one eyeball equals instant monster

• Mini bubbles instead of random plastic toys parents secretly throw away two days later

One mom actually asked if I hired somebody to decorate.

Girl…

It was Target.

Dollar Tree.

Coffee.

And questionable amounts of hot glue.

Your Party Checklist: Ensuring a Smooth Celebration

I used to think I didn’t need a checklist.

I was wrong.

Every single birthday I’d forget something ridiculously obvious.

Now I check these the night before:

• Invitations packed
• Birthday candles (because somehow they disappear every year)
• Camera charged
• Extra tape
• Sharpie
• Goodie bags
• Ice cream actually fitting in the freezer
• Birthday outfit that isn’t somehow still in the washing machine

Future Me always appreciates Past Me for this.

What Happened After the Party

This was honestly my favorite part.

Before the party even started, a couple of the kids were standing by the front door comparing invitations.

One little boy kept pointing at all the monster doors asking which one led to Mike’s room.

Another little girl said Sulley looked “really fluffy,” which made Charlotte smile because she’d helped me pick that design.

Then one of the moms looked at me and said, “This invitation got my son so excited all week.”

That was it.

Not the balloons.

Not the decorations.

The invitation.

And that’s kinda why I still spend way too much time making these things.

They’re the very first little peek at the party.

Kids start imagining everything before they even walk through your front door.

Can I edit this Monsters Inc invitation on my phone?

Yep! I still use my laptop because dragging text around with my fingers makes me irrationally grumpy, but Canva works great on your phone too.

Is the Canva template really free?

Yep. Everything is editable inside Canva. If you happen to click on a Pro graphic by accident, Canva will tell you, but these templates are made with free users in mind.

Matte or glossy cardstock?

I almost always grab matte because fingerprints don’t show up after fifteen kids pass the invitation around at school. Glossy makes the colors really pop though, so honestly you can’t go wrong.

Where do you print invitations?

Most of the time? Walgreens.

If they’re running one of their little photo promos, a 5×7 print is usually around twenty cents, which is honestly hard to beat. Staples is another solid option if you want thicker cardstock that feels a little more special.

When do you send birthday invitations?

Usually about two or three weeks before the party. Any earlier and somebody’s gonna lose it under a pile of school papers.

Do the invitations really get kids excited?

Oh, 100%.

I’ve watched kids walk into our house already talking about Mike, Sulley, and monster doors because they’d been staring at the invitation all week.

That’s when you know it did its job.
