Tbh, this whole Jujutsu Kaisen party thing kinda snuck up on me.
Not in a dramatic “everything is falling apart” way. More like… regular mom life chaos where you suddenly realize your kid has been talking about something for three weeks and your brain just never fully processed it.
We were sitting in the school pickup line foreverrrr, and I’m digging around for a hair tie, thinking about whether we have enough chicken for dinner, when my kid casually goes:
“Oh btw I need birthday invites soon.”
Soon??
Sir what does “soon” mean to you 😭
And naturally it couldn’t be dinosaurs or soccer or literally anything I already understand. Nope. We are fully in the Jujutsu Kaisen era over here now.

I’m still trying to learn everybody’s names honestly. Half these characters look exhausted and emotionally damaged. Why are these cartoons carrying the weight of the world all the time 😂
Meanwhile my son is explaining powers and storylines to me while I’m just trying not to miss the pickup line moving forward.
Anyway I said:
“Yeah we can totally make some.”
As if I had any clue what I was doing.
I did not.
The Evening I Opened Canva “Just For Five Minutes” and Somehow Made 12+ Different Versions
So that night, after everyone finally went to bed (and I reheated my coffee for the third time), I opened Canva.
I’m not gonna lie, I go into Canva with confidence every time and then immediately forget how to do basic things.
Like… why is the text doing that? Where did my image go? Why is everything slightly off??
But I typed in Jujutsu Kaisen birthday invitations and… okay wait. There were actually some decent starting points.
Not perfect. Some were a little too cutesy. Some looked like they were made for toddlers (which—absolutely not, my kid would roast me for that).
But a few had that darker anime vibe going on, so I grabbed one and just started messing with it.
What Actually Made the Invite Feel “Cool” (According to My Kid)
It’s not about “pretty,” it’s about vibe
I learned this the hard way.
At first I tried to make it look nice. Balanced. Clean. You know… like something I would like.
My kid walks by, glances at it, and goes, “Why does it look like that?”
Cool cool cool. Love that feedback.
So I scrapped that version and leaned way more into the whole anime energy thing. Dark background, reds, blacks, a little electric blue.
Slightly dramatic. Slightly chaotic. Honestly? Kinda fun once I stopped overthinking it.
I added these swirly smoky effects (I think they’re supposed to be like cursed energy??) and he immediately goes, “Oh that’s sick.”
That’s when I knew I was finally on the right track.
Big character = instant approval
Do not make the character tiny. I tried that first because I thought it would look more “designed.”
Nope.
The second I made the character bigger, like front and center, he was into it. Kids don’t want to squint at an invite. They want to see their favorite character and go “yeah okay I’m coming to this.”
Why Canva Saved Me (Because I Was This Close to Giving Up)
I am not crafty. At all.
I’m the mom who buys supplies for a project and then just… doesn’t use them. So the fact that I even attempted this felt ambitious.
But Canva is honestly kind of hard to mess up once you get going.
You just drag things around, swap text, change colors. No downloading weird stuff, no trying to figure out complicated software. I didn’t have to start from scratch, which is probably the only reason I didn’t quit halfway and just text the other moms instead.
Also free. That part matters.

What I Messed Up (So You Don’t Do the Same Thing)
The font situation… wow
Okay. So I picked this thin white font because it looked so aesthetic on my screen.
Printed it out…
You literally could not read it.
Like I had to tilt the paper and squint. Absolutely not.
So I went back and:
- Made the font way thicker
- Added a little outline/glow
- Increased the size more than felt necessary
And yeah, that fixed it immediately.
Lesson learned: if you have to “test your eyesight,” it’s not the right font.
I tried to include way too much info
I don’t know why I do this. I think I’m being helpful, but it just turns into chaos.
I had:
Full address
Extra notes
“Please arrive on time”
“Snacks will be provided”
Probably my life story at that point
It looked… crowded. Like everything was yelling at you.
So I deleted a bunch of it. Just kept:
Name
Age
Date & time
Location
RSVP
Suddenly it looked 10x better.
Also… I almost forgot RSVP entirely. Had to squeeze that in at the end like a clown.
Real-Life Design Tips (aka what worked after me messing around for an hour)
Keep it simple… but not boring
Here’s what ended up working for me:
- Stick to 2–3 colors max (I did black, red, blue)
- Make the character the main focus
- Use bold fonts (like don’t be shy, bigger is better here)
- Leave some empty space (I KNOW it feels wrong but it helps so much)
Also, at one point I went a little wild with effects.
Shadows. Glows. Gradients. Everything.
It started looking like one of those old YouTube thumbnails where everything is just… screaming at you.
So I toned it down.
Less chaos = better chaos. Somehow that’s true.
Printing… aka where I almost made it worse
I do not trust my printer
My home printer has trust issues. And by that I mean I don’t trust it at all.
So I just uploaded the file to Walgreens because it’s super close and I was already out running errands.
Picked 5×7, hit order, done.
I think it was like… under $5 total? For all of them. Honestly not bad.
Glossy was a mistake (for me)
I thought glossy would look cooler.
Nope.
It made everything super reflective, and you could see fingerprints immediately. Also the dark colors looked kinda weird under light.
Switched to matte and it was way better. Softer, cleaner, more like an actual invite instead of a photo print.
If you’re debating, just go matte. Save yourself the redo.
Then I Accidentally Got Too Into the Party Setup
It kinda snowballed
Once I finished the Jujutsu Kaisen birthday invitations, I was like… okay wait, now everything has to match.
So I did:
Black tablecloth
Red cups
Blue glow sticks (which actually looked pretty cool at night)
Nothing fancy, just stuff I grabbed while already out.
One random thing that worked really well
I printed a couple extra invites and used them as decorations.
Just taped them near the snack table and gift area.
It took like 2 minutes and made everything feel more put together. Like I planned it. Which I absolutely did not.
The Part That Actually Got Me (Not Gonna Lie)
He was excited about the invite
I thought this was just a formality.
Like okay, we need invites, let’s just get it done.
But he grabbed one off the counter and showed his friend like it was some rare collectible or something.
And then one of the moms texted me like, “Wait, did you make that??”
I almost said no out of reflex 😂
That part made it feel worth it. Even the late-night Canva struggle.
Quick Answers Because I Had These Same Questions
- Do you need Canva Pro?
Nope. I used the free version the whole time.
Just avoid anything with that little crown icon and you’re good.
- What size works best?
I did 5×7.
It feels like a “real” invite but still easy to print and hand out.
- Could you just send it digitally?
Honestly… yes. And it would’ve been way easier.
I almost did that.
But my kid really wanted to hand them out at school, so here we are.
- How many should you print?
Print a couple extras.
I think I did like +3 just in case—and yeah, one got bent in my bag, so that came in handy.
- What if you mess it up?
You will. I did.
Just duplicate your design and try again. Canva makes it super forgiving.
Final Thoughts (From a Slightly Tired Mom)
It wasn’t perfect.
I changed things like five times, printed the wrong version once, almost forgot key info… you know, the usual.
But my kid loved it. His friends thought it was cool. No one got confused about where or when to show up.
That’s a win.
And honestly? For something I threw together last minute, these Jujutsu Kaisen birthday invitations turned out way better than I expected.
Would I plan ahead next time? …probably not 😅
