  • My Real Mom Experience + Printing Tips — what I changed in Canva, what didn’t work, and how I printed invitations without spending a fortune.

Last Tuesday morning, I was packing Charlotte’s lunch, looking for a missing sock (because somehow there is ALWAYS one missing sock), and she casually goes, “Mom… can my birthday have puppies?” And honestly? That was the whole conversation. No big dramatic plan, no Pinterest board at 2 AM (okay maybe a tiny one later 😂), just a kid who really wanted puppies and a mom who opened Canva five minutes later.

And that’s basically how this 101 Dalmatian Invitation happened.

The 101 Dalmatian Invitation I Made After My Kid Said “I Want Puppies”

I’ve learned something after doing birthday parties for Charlotte and Louise… kids don’t always care about the fancy stuff we moms spend hours stressing over.

Like, we’re over here comparing balloon colors and wondering if the cake topper matches the napkins (please tell me I’m not the only one), and the kids are just excited because they saw a cute puppy.

So for this invitation, I kept it fun and simple.

I went with the classic Dalmatian look — black and white spots, little puppy faces, tiny paw prints, and a pop of red because it just makes everything feel more like a party.

I didn’t want it to look like a random cartoon flyer though. I wanted something that felt cute when kids saw it, but also something parents wouldn’t mind putting on their fridge.

The biggest thing I noticed with kids’ invitations? They love recognizing the theme right away. They don’t need 100 little details. Sometimes a few cute puppies and a fun color combo do the job.

Honestly… less work for mom. I’m here for that.

What I Did When I Made This Canva Invitation (And What I Messed Up 😂)

I usually make invitations at night after the kids are finally asleep.

You know that magical 30-minute window when the house is quiet and nobody is asking for water, snacks, or “Mom, come look at this random bug outside”?

Yeah. That time.

I opened Canva and started playing around with different layouts for the 101 Dalmatian Invitation.

At first, I went a little overboard with the paw prints.

Like… why did I think adding paw prints EVERYWHERE was a good idea?

The invitation basically looked like a puppy parade walked across the page and forgot where they were going.

Cute idea. Terrible execution. 😂

So I removed a bunch of them and made the important stuff bigger — the name, birthday date, location, and RSVP details.

One little thing I always do now: I zoom out and look at the invitation from far away.

Because sometimes when you’re editing, you’re staring at tiny details for so long that your brain goes, “Yep, this is perfect!”

Then you look again the next morning and you’re like… “Wait. What was I thinking?”

Mom brain is real.

I also had to adjust the colors before printing. The black spots looked way too heavy on my first test print, so I softened them a little.

It’s funny because Canva colors look amazing on a screen, but printers have their own personality. Basically, printers like to humble us. 😂

I didn’t want to make a million options because honestly… nobody has time to scroll through 50 invitations.

These are the styles I actually think work best for different kids:

Classic Puppy Party Invitation

Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers who are in that “I love every animal I see” phase.

Simple Black & White Dalmatian Invitation

For moms who love a cleaner party look but still want the theme to be obvious.

Cute Cartoon Puppy Birthday Invite

Great for little ones who want something playful, colorful, and full of personality.

Red Accent Dalmatian Party Invitation

A fun choice for kids who are getting a little older and want something less baby-ish.

Minimal Paw Print Invitation

For the “cute but simple” moms. The ones who don’t want their dining room looking like a party supply store exploded. (I’ve been there.)

Easy 101 Dalmatian Birthday Party Ideas That Didn’t Break the Bank

Cute 101 Dalmatians Birthday Party Snacks

Okay, can we talk about how easy it is to accidentally spend way too much on kids’ parties?

You start with “I’ll just grab a few decorations.”

Next thing you know, your cart has matching plates, custom cups, a themed backdrop, and something called a “luxury dessert display.”

Like… excuse me, when did a birthday party become a wedding? 😂

For Charlotte’s party, I tried to keep things simple but still fun.

Puppy Adoption Station

This one was probably my favorite because kids loved pretending.

I grabbed some small stuffed puppies and made little adoption cards.

That’s it.

No fancy setup. No complicated instructions.

Kids just love having something they can “take care of.”

You can find inexpensive stuffed animals and little party extras on places like Amazon, or check handmade printable options on Etsy if you want something cuter.

Dalmatian Spot Decorating Activity

Super easy.

I bought plain white paper cups and bags, then let the kids add black spots with stickers and markers.

The funny thing? They stayed busy way longer than I expected.

Sometimes the simplest activities are the ones that actually work.

Puppy Snack Table

I did not go crazy here.

Because honestly, kids are not judging my dessert table. 😂

I made:

  • cupcakes with chocolate spots
  • popcorn cups labeled “puppy treats”
  • simple cookies

The kids were happy. The moms were happy. Nobody needed a five-tier cake.

Win-win.

DIY Puppy Photo Booth

This was another easy one.

Black and white balloons, puppy ears, and a few silly props.

The kids mostly just made funny faces, which honestly was the whole point.

How I Printed My 101 Dalmatian Invitation

101 Dalmatians Birthday Cupcakes

For printing, I usually keep it super simple.

My go-to is Walgreens 5×7 photo printing because it’s affordable (around $0.20 per print when there are deals), and honestly it saves me so much time.

If I want something that feels a little more special, I’ll use Staples and print on thicker cardstock.

For paper finish:

Matte: My personal favorite. It feels more like a real invitation, and little fingerprints don’t show as much.

Glossy: The colors pop more, especially if your design has lots of bright details.

Both work. I usually choose matte because it gives that “cute birthday invitation” feeling instead of looking like a regular photo.

Also… please test print first.

I learned this the hard way after printing something where the text looked perfect online but was way too small in real life.

Classic Canva mistake. 😂

After The Party: Did The Invitation Actually Matter?

101 Dalmatians Birthday Games

Honestly? This is my favorite part.

After the party, Charlotte found one extra invitation sitting on my desk and said, “Mom, I want to keep this one.”

And I was like… okay, my heart. 🥹

Because it reminded me why I still love making these little things.

It’s not about making the most expensive party or having everything perfectly matched.

It’s those tiny details kids remember.

The puppy theme. The excitement. The feeling that the party was made just for them.

And that’s why I’ll probably keep opening Canva every birthday season.

Even when I say, “I’m keeping it simple this year.”

Because we all know moms never really mean that. 😂

FAQ About 101 Dalmatian Birthday Invitations

Can I edit this 101 Dalmatian Invitation in Canva?

Yep! You can customize the child’s name, birthday details, colors, and other information directly in Canva.

What size should I make a birthday invitation?

A 5×7 inch invitation is the most common size in the US. It fits standard envelopes and is easy to print.

Is a 101 Dalmatian party good for toddlers?

Definitely. Puppies are usually a huge hit with toddlers and preschoolers because they already love animals and cute characters.

Should I print birthday invitations at home?

You can! For just a few invitations, a home printer works. But if you need a bunch, Walgreens or Staples usually makes life easier.

What decorations match a 101 Dalmatian birthday party?

Black and white balloons, paw prints, puppy toys, red accents, and simple animal-themed snacks are honestly enough to make the theme come together.
